As the UK’s leading debt advice charity, we provide advice and support to people in severe financial difficulty. Alongside the direct advice and support we provide, we campaign and lobby for change. In recent years we have been at the forefront of the campaign for greater regulation of payday loans and we are currently campaigning on a number of fronts including credit card reform, a cap on unauthorised overdraft charges and a new scheme to provide better help and support to people in debt.

Our continued development depends on being able to get our messages across and to build our presence in the minds of consumers and in the arena of public debate. Our work has a real impact on policy, legislation and regulation meaning that more people are protected from falling into problem debt, and debt is easier to manage and quicker to recover from when it does strike.

We are looking for a talented Media and Public Affairs Officer to join our busy team in London to play an integral role in the delivery of our strategy.

Key responsibilities for the role include:

  • providing a consistent, professional and timely response to media enquiries
  • proactively securing media coverage to support the charity’s External Affairs strategy
  • supporting the charity’s public affairs work
  • establishing and maintaining relationships with key journalists and public affairs contacts
  • producing reports, summaries and analysis of our media coverage
  • supporting the charity’s clients who volunteer to undertake media or public affairs work to increase understanding

You will need experience of journalism, PR or communications work that will enable you to develop strong media relations and effectively promote the charity.

You will need to demonstrate:

  • excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • excellent written skills, with the ability to produce high quality creative, effective and accurate written materials
  • good awareness of news and current affairs

The closing date for the role is Sunday 2nd April 2017.

We aim to conduct interviews for shortlisted candidates on Wednesday 12th and Thursday 13th April 2017.

StepChange Debt Charity is an Equal Opportunities Employer and we place great importance and value in the training and development of all our employees.
